Hello Louis Riel Families,
As we prepare to return to another year of teaching and learning at Louis Riel, we wanted to reach out to provide some basic start-up information for you and your student(s). Our teaching staff will be in the building planning for the arrival of our Bisons next week and will send home a welcome back email to their homeroom students by the end of the week. This email communication will include important logistical information for the first day of school on Tuesday, September 2.
- Introduction to your Homeroom Teacher
- How and where to safely drop your student
- Where to find homeroom classes and teachers
- What to bring on your first day

IPPs and/or Medical Documentation
If your child is joining us from a CBE school and has an Individualized Program Plan (IPP) or medical alert/condition, you do not need to send any documentation unless there has been a recent reassessment or diagnosis. All student records transfer with students as they are enrolled. If you are coming from OUTSIDE the CBE, please provide the school with supporting documentation such as external IPP documents, diagnosis letters, and your most recent assessment so we can begin drafting an IPP.
Note | IPP drafting and revising for the new year will begin in September
Class Lists and Courses
Class lists have been created with input from Louis Riel teachers at the end of the year last year. Class lists were thoughtfully designed to provide a learning environment that takes into consideration the academic, developmental, and social wellbeing of all students in that homeroom group. If your student is new to Louis Riel, their assignment to a homeroom was determined after consulting with their previous school during our June transition planning meetings.
Class lists and Option class enrolments will be visible in Powerschool on the first day of class. Every option course your student is assigned has been based on their requests. Although we cannot provide classes in a specific sequence, students can be assured their courses are all within their top 5 requests.
Attendance
Louis Riel school has a “soft start” at 7:50 am which is the ideal time to have your student enter the building to prepare for a full day of learning. Our classes begin at 8:00 am and the expectation is that students are in class and ready to learn at that point. Regular and punctual school attendance is critical for student success. Regular attendance supports a child’s ability to learn, grow and develop social skills, and fosters a sense of belonging at school. In Alberta, school attendance is mandatory for children between the ages of 6 and 16. Students who attend regularly are better positioned to engage fully in classroom activities and are even more likely to complete high school successfully. Chronic absenteeism, such as missing just two days a month or 20 days a year starting in Grade 1, can add up to the equivalent of nearly an entire year of missed learning by the end of Grade 9.
If/When you are must call in a late/absence for your child, dial 403-777-7650 and press 1 for the Attendance Line. In your message, provide the following information:
- Your student’s name (please spell their last name)
- Grade and Homeroom Teacher (grades k-5)
- A reason for the absence or late
Excused Absences: the following absences considered excused in CBE:
- If your child is sick or has a medical or dental appointment.
- If you have a family emergency or a funeral.
- If you have a religious or cultural observance.
- If there is a court appearance directly related to your child.
- If your child is suspended, expelled, or on a supported leave from school.
Unexcused Absences: the following absences considered unexcused in CBE:
- If you take a vacation or family holiday during school days.
- CBE provides many opportunities for families to holiday during winter, spring and summer breaks. We encourage you to book holidays during these breaks
- If your child needs to start late or leave early from school, due to non-school related extracurricular activities (athletic activities, enrichment programs, music programs, theatre performances, etc.)
