Our CTF programs are for everyone, whether you choose to explore and develop a new interest or specialize in a current interest. Participation in CTF enhances your creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Louis Riel's CTF Program Includes

  • Fine Visual Arts: In the visual arts program at Louis Riel, students explore a wide variety of art media and processes including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, printmaking, fibre arts, sculpture, construction, mixed media, installation, and the pottery wheel. Under the guidance of a working artist and professional, students engage creatively and develop their personal artistic expression. They build their problem solving and critical analysis skills in a formative environment, while becoming empowered to self-express and take risks.
  • In addition to developing their understanding of the elements of principles of design, students engage in historical, contemporary and Indigenous perspectives through art history explorations and artist studies that broaden their knowledge of art movements over time, and make explicit the connections and value of the visual arts in our daily lives. Students also benefit from art as a mindful activity that supports their wellness and well-being.
  • Food Studies: Food Studies is a student-centred discovery course that connects CTF with Science, Social Studies, and Health. Students develop and expand their culinary skills, sanitary food handling procedures, and food preparation techniques. Food labs and recipe choices will involve healthy, fresh ingredients whenever possible and explore foods from many cultures. Students will learn the “why” scientific phenomena behind baking. They will get to explore the processes of fermentation and the Maillard Reaction while using scientific tools like scales for precise measurement. The Foods program is divided between theory assignments and cooking labs that put into practice the theory studied. The general learner goals in Foods are to allow students to develop practical life skills, explore personal interests, develop teamwork skills, and investigate career options.
  • Outdoor Education: In Outdoor Education a main focus is for students to develop lifestyle strategies that encourage a positive attitude towards the natural environment. Students will work towards establishing an appreciation and respect for the environment through hands on and practical applications. Students will  have the opportunity to build their skills in various outdoor activities.  These skills will be reinforced during various on and off-campus trips, which vary depending on the grade that a student is in.   Activities and trips may include the following;  outdoor cooking, camping, overnight hostel trip, kayaking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
  • Band: The band program at Louis begins in Grade 7, with Grade 8 and 9 band classes continuing to build on the instrument proficiency and fundamental skills learned in grade 7. There is also an after-school jazz combo one day per week. By being in band, students learn the value of building community and working together to support each other in order to accomplish a common goal. Band is an enriching experience for students as they explore concert band and pop repertoire, have an opportunity to play in small ensembles, play short solos, conduct the band, and participate in master classes and sectional educational sessions led by professional musicians and guest artists. There are two concerts each year: one in December, and the other at the end of the school year.
