Hello Louis Riel families,

Another short week has come and gone but the chilly and damp weather remains. We had field trips to investigate the Calgary Police interpretive museum and our grade 8s got to experience Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mrs. Turner’s young Scientists put their engineering skills to the test as their egg protection drop capsules were subjected to a two-story drop to flat... or splat. We know this time of year is always an exciting one, and we also know that student stress levels can begin to build along with the excitement. With this in mind, the week ended with a wellness period on Friday that gave students the opportunity to engage in one of several planned wellness activities. These guided activities involved either play, vigorous exercise, artistic expression, calming movement, or an aspect of social skill development. The feedback for these wellness events from students is positive, and we look forward to the next opportunity to learn and practice more wellness skills together in June.

Upcoming Track and Field Meet

Great work to all students who attended Track and Field tryouts last week, and congrats to everyone who has earned a spot on our team. These students have now been given their form packages and are asked to have their Acknowledgment of Risk forms signed and returned to Mr. Olsen as soon as possible. The $20.00 team fee for track athletes will be available for payment on MyCBE starting on Tuesday May 27. Thanks for your attention to this. We will require many volunteers for our Track Meet on June 10. If your child is on our track team and you’re available to join us on this day, please connect with Mr. Olsen at msolsen@cbe.ab.ca

Attendance after Lunch

We have noticed a growing trend in late arrivals to class following the lunch break among our Grade 7 to 9 students. Many of the late arrivals are caused by students being off campus at lunch and not being mindful of the time. Some of these lates are being caused by venturing too far afield and students are relying on public transit to get them to and from their lunch destinations. We have heard from administration at John Ware school that some of our students are going to the 7-11 across the street from their school. The transit ride is between 10 to 15 minutes long each way and students are not always successful with their timing to arrive at the bus stop.

If you know your student leaves campus at lunchtime, please remind them they must be in class ready to learn by 12:56 when classes start. If you don’t know if they venture far from school or not, a conversation about where they go at lunch could help them improve their readiness to learn in the afternoon.

Louis Riel Parent Society and School Council(s)

Our next meeting will be the AGM held this Wednesday, May 29. Our Phys Ed team of Mr. Olsen and Mr. Knight will share a presentation about how they’ve designed the Phys Ed program with a focus on student engagement and wellbeing at Louis Riel. The Council is looking to recruit several new executive members for next year including President, VP, Treasurer, Key Communicator, and Webmaster.

We invite you to attend this virtual meeting on Wednesday to learn more about our council(s).  Link to Zoom meeting

Please visit our website to learn more about council:  https://www.wearelouis.ca

GPA Parent Association

The GATE Parent Association is unique in that it represents parents and supports the GATE Program in all GATE schools, but it is independent of the Calgary Board of Education and other parent organizations within those schools. To learn more please visit our website https://gatecalgary.ca/

Spring and Summer Road Safety

We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. Please remind our students about the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely with our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways, we can keep an eye on them better now that we are getting our video cameras installed outside too.

Fun Lunches at Louis

Fun lunches are a major source of fundraising for the School Council, give parents a day off from packing lunch, and are exciting for the kids to receive!  Sign up at www.HealthyHunger.ca. There is also a link on the Louis Riel School website.

It is important to note that due to health and safety protocols on food storage, the school will not be able to accommodate storing left-over lunches to the next day if your child is absent. Left-over lunches will be donated. If your student has an upcoming field trip please double check that a fun lunch isn’t scheduled on that day so you can cancel if needed.
