Hello Louis Riel families,

With a short week that included our first Provincial Achievement test of the year and the closing of the Badminton season, many of us were excited to head into the long weekend when we were greeted with the typical May-Long rain, sleet and snow on Friday. This long weekend weather may be disappointing to many since it literally puts a damper on outdoor activity, but we could also be thankful for the much-needed moisture and the benefits it provides agricultural producers and those communities struggling with wildfire already this year. Despite the complications of wet weather we could probably all agree it is preferable to the special air quality advisories we experienced last year in May and June.

The May long weekend signals the final six weeks of school, planting season for many backyard gardeners, track and field season, run club season, PAT season, and the last push to the end of the school year for students and staff. Being prepared for what lies ahead is important since the last few weeks of school always pass by very quickly. For staff, this means completing final teaching and learning tasks with students, collecting evidence of student learning, assessing and analyzing that evidence, and preparing report card marks and comments. For students it can mean staying engaged in their learning in the classroom and instructional spaces despite the excitement of the approaching summer break. For families it can mean connecting with their student by looking through MyCBE to understand what they may need to focus on, supporting them as they complete learning tasks, collaborating with teachers to support their student, and asking for support when needed. For all of us it means being intentional about keeping our focus on collaboration and supporting our joint efforts to ensure student success and well-being for all members of our learning community. We all have a part to play and contributions to make to the learning community and team that supports Louis Riel students.

The final six weeks of the school year are here so please read on for more news, updates, and information about all things Louis Riel.

Invitation to Attend the GATE Parent Association Board Meeting

Tuesday May 21, 2024, 7:00 PM on Zoom

The GATE Parent Association will be holding an open Board meeting to answer questions from parents of GATE students interested in learning more about volunteering for the GPA. We have open positions that require volunteers. We will also be discussing the remainder of the association's year and updating the GPA's bylaws.

If you have a student registered in the GATE program for this school year or next year, we would love it if you could attend.

Register to receive the meeting link!

Spring and Summer Road Safety

We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. Please remind our students about the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely with our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways, we can keep an eye on them better now that we are getting our video cameras installed outside too.

Fun Lunches at Louis

Fun lunches are a major source of fundraising for the Parent Council, give parents a day off from packing lunch, and are exciting for the kids to receive!  Sign up at Healthy Hunger.

It is important to note that due to health and safety protocols on food storage, the school will not be able to accommodate storing left-over lunches to the next day if your child is absent. Left-over lunches will be donated. If your student has an upcoming field trip please double check that a fun-lunch isn’t scheduled on that day so you can cancel if needed.
