Hello Louis Riel families,
This week had an unexpected event that led to quite a bit of excitement. Late Monday night, the water main leading into Louis Riel school failed and water began to seep into the building. Thanks to the watchful eye of our caretaking staff, the flooding emergency was quickly reported to the CBE Facility Operations team and help was on the way. By 1:30 am Tuesday morning there were crews on site doing their best to manage the water and protect the building from flooding damage. The city of Calgary shut off the water main and the restoration services team were able to vacuum and mop up enough to ensure we could keep the school open for the day. CBE plumbers were also dispatched to ensure water could continue to flow to and from the building to maintain sewer and sanitation services. When teachers arrived at the school they learned of the incident and quickly helped move the contents of the two two affected classrooms elsewhere in the building so students could focus on their learning far away from the drone of dehumidifiers and fans. What could have been a disaster resulting in a total school closure was managed so effectively by the CBE facilities team that it ended up as an exciting morning with some minor inconveniences to our students and the staff. Work continues onsite to repair the water main and restore our hallway and classrooms to their former fully functional state.
Although Tuesday had a somewhat frantic start, the remaining days of the week passed much more smoothly and we even saw some sunshine on Friday. Enjoy the weekend and although we should all the time, please remember to celebrate Mothers on Sunday!

GPA Parent Association
The GATE Parent Association is unique in that it represents parents and supports the GATE Program in all GATE schools, but it is independent of the Calgary Board of Education and other parent organizations within those schools. To learn more please visit our website https://gatecalgary.ca/
Grade 9 PAT This Week
Our Grade 9 students will write their first Provincial Achievement Test of the year on Monday morning. The first test is English and will be written on school laptops using a new secure browser platform that the students have practiced with previously. We look forward to having our students show us what they know.
Spring and Summer Road Safety
When we begin to see warmer temperatures we begin to see more students choosing to ride bikes and scooters to school. We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. What we need to remind our students about is the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely at our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways we can keep an eye on them better now that we have video cameras outside.
Fun Lunches at Louis
Fun lunches are a major source of fundraising for the School Council, give parents a day off from packing lunch, and are exciting for the kids to receive! Sign up at www.HealthyHunger.ca. There is also a link on the Louis Riel School website.
It is important to note that due to health and safety protocols on food storage, the school will not be able to accommodate storing left-over lunches to the next day if your child is absent. Left-over lunches will be donated. If your student has an upcoming field trip please double check that a fun-lunch isn’t scheduled on that day so you can cancel if needed.
