Hello Louis Riel families,

Another typically busy week has come to an end at Louis Riel school. We had in-class experiences with Teacher’s Pet, virtual tours of atoms and molecules with VR Core, out of the city experiences at Jumping Pound demonstration forest, and overnight out of the city experiences at Frank Slide. Intramurals saw the final championship round of Duck Hunt and our elementary run club hosted a meet on our school grounds. This week was the LRPAC’s AGM where a new executive was elected and many new families joined us for the final meeting of the school year. Thursday evening was our inaugural new-to-Louis open house as we invited students and their families who will be joining the Louis Riel community next year. Families were welcomed to the school with an orientation to all things Louis in the South gym before they ventured into our hallways, classrooms, and instructional spaces. They enjoyed the opportunity to meet teaching staff, speak with leadership students, eat cookies prepared by our CTF Foods students, listen to buskers in our Band room, and watch other demonstrations put on by students in some of our classrooms. It was wonderful to meet our new students and their families and we look forward to seeing them all again when school is back in session after summer break.

Our water main upgrade project is nearing completion and the large temporary water supply hose has been removed from our main floor hallway. Thanks to the efforts of our exceptional facility operations and trades teams we’re nearly back to business as usual. We look forward to having our grade 4 classrooms back where they’re supposed to be.

Next week will see more field trips with all of our Grade 8's away at Camp Chief Hector and more of our 7's will be off the Frank Slide overnight as well. Enjoy the weekend and we’ll look forward to another week of learning and growing together at Louis Riel.

Upcoming Track and Field Meet

Congratulations to everyone who has earned a spot on our Track and Field team. Students have been given their form packages and are asked to have their Acknowledgment of Risk forms signed and returned to Mr. Olsen as soon as possible. The $20.00 team fee for track athletes are available for payment on MYCBE. Thanks for your attention to this.

We will require many volunteers for our Track Meet on June 10. If your child is on our track team and you’re available to join us on this day, please connect with Mr. Olsen at msolsen@cbe.ab.ca

Attendance After Lunch

We have noticed a growing trend in late arrivals to class following the lunch break among our Grade 7 to 9 students. Many of the late arrivals are caused by students being off campus at lunch and not being mindful of the time. Some of these lates are being caused by venturing too far afield and students are relying on public transit to get them to and from their lunch destinations. We have heard from administration at John Ware school that some of our students are going to the 7-11 across the street from their school. The transit ride is between 10 to 15 minutes long each way and students are not always successful with their timing to arrive at the bus stop.

If you know your student leaves campus at lunchtime, please remind them they must be in class ready to learn by 12:56 PM when classes start. If you don’t know if they venture far from school or not, a conversation about where they go at lunch could help them improve their readiness to learn in the afternoon.

Louis Riel Parent and School Council(s)

Our final meeting of the year was the AGM held on May 29. We would like to thank the council’s continued dedication to supporting students and their learning experience at Louis Riel School. We truly appreciate your efforts and generosity. We look forward to working together towards an even better Louis Riel School next year.

GPA Parent Association

The GATE Parent Association is unique in that it represents parents and supports the GATE Program in all GATE schools, but it is independent of the Calgary Board of Education and other parent organizations within those schools. To learn more please visit our website!

Spring and Summer Road Safety

We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. Please remind our students about the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely with our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways, we can keep an eye on them better now that we are getting our video cameras installed outside too.

Fun Lunches at Louis

Fun lunches are a major source of fundraising for the Parent Council, give parents a day off from packing lunch, and are exciting for the kids to receive! Sign up! There is also a link on the Louis Riel School website.

It is important to note that due to health and safety protocols on food storage, the school will not be able to accommodate storing left-over lunches to the next day if your child is absent. Left-over lunches will be donated. If your student has an upcoming field trip please double check that a fun-lunch isn’t scheduled on that day so you can cancel if needed.
