Hello Louis Riel families,

June is just not slowing down at all and it’s safe to say that it won’t until June 27 by about noon as we load the buses to say goodbye for the summer. This past week saw our divisional track and field meet, multiple PATs, multiple field trips, Grade 9 Farewell, an amazing Band and Choir concert, and the final wellness sessions of the year. We recognize how busy the past weeks have been and how busy the next couple of weeks will be as summer approaches. We also recognize that as the summer approaches, the “summer is almost here” energy in the building builds as teachers continue to redirect and refocus all that energy on learning. June includes a lot of learning and fun for students to balance, and it is always an amazing opportunity for our community of learners to celebrate just how far we’ve come over the year. We look forward to finding the balance between end of the year learning and fun in the final weeks of the school year, and we hope all our students do too!

The Mission Impossible obstacle course challenge will continue for the elementary Phys Ed classes until Wednesday next week and the 7-9 students will take up the challenge on Thursday and Friday. It looks even more impossible than last year and only a couple of students have made it through so far! Next week will see three more provincial achievement tests for our Grade 9s: Math Part B on Tuesday, Social Studies on Wednesday and Science on Thursday. Grade 6s will write their Social Studies on Wednesday and their Science on Thursday.

Enjoy the weekend, celebrate all the dads on Father’s Day and we’ll look forward to another week of learning and growing together at Louis Riel. Read on for more updates and announcements.

Staffing Announcements

This time of year is exciting for many reasons and staff taking the opportunity to move on to teach at other buildings is always exciting news to share. Next year Mr. Wetsch and Mr. Davidson will both be moving on to join the staff at Dr. E. P. Scarlett. Ms. Evans will be moving to Henry Wise Wood high school so there is a chance some of our students will get a chance to see them again in their high school classrooms. Although we will miss them, we wish them well in their new teaching assignments in their new schools.

Our departing staff will leave some rather large shoes to fill so we will be actively searching for and hiring the best staff to step into them in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more updates in the final Bison bulletins of the school year.

Louis Student Work Featured in Nation-Wide Competitive Poetry Anthology

Earlier this year, Louis Riel students submitted original poems to a national competition for publication. The latest anthology entitled “In the City” has recently been published and it features several of our very own Louis Riel poets. Congratulations to all those students who submitted their poetry and to those whose work was published.

Attendance In June

We have noticed a growing trend in late arrivals to class following the lunch break among our Grade 7 to 9 students. Many of the late arrivals are caused by students being off campus at lunch and not being mindful of the time. If you know your student leaves campus at lunchtime, please remind them they must be in class ready to learn by 12:56 when classes start. If you don’t know if they venture far from school or not, a conversation about where they go at lunch could help them improve their readiness to learn in the afternoon.

Louis Riel Parent and School Council(s)

Our final meeting of the year was the AGM held on May 29th. We would like to thank the council’s continued dedication to supporting students and their learning experience at Louis Riel School. We truly appreciate your efforts and generosity. We look forward to working together towards an even better Louis Riel School next year.

GPA Parent Association

The GATE Parent Association is unique in that it represents parents and supports the GATE Program in all GATE schools, but it is independent of the Calgary Board of Education and other parent organizations within those schools. To learn more please visit our website https://gatecalgary.ca/

Spring and Summer Road Safety

We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. Please remind our students about the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely with our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways, we can keep an eye on them better now that we are getting our video cameras installed outside too.
