Hello Louis Riel families,

The first full week of June has already passed by and the month doesn’t look to be getting any slower in the weeks to come. The hallways were less busy with all our Grade 8 students away at Camp Chief Hector for most of the week and many of our Grade 7's away at Frank Slide overnight. Our crossing patrol teams got to roll out on their bikes to their annual picnic adventure on Thursday and enjoyed a beautifully sunny ride together. Now that our water main upgrade project is nearly complete, Ms. Campbell’s class was excited to relocate their temporary classroom on the stage back to their usual location. Our students who use the east hallway lockers can also finally stop packing all their school supplies with them all day. The mural club is making excellent progress on their newest project outside the art room and we’re looking forward to seeing the final product soon!

Mr. Knight and Mr. Olsen have been putting the finishing touches on the Mission Impossible obstacle course challenge for the elementary phys ed classes and it looks even more impossible than usual this year! Next week will also see two provincial achievement tests for our Grade 9's: English Part B on Wednesday and Math Part A on Thursday. Both days will be a week 1 rotation (periods 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) in order to accommodate the exams.

Enjoy the weekend and we’ll look forward to another week of learning and growing together at Louis Riel.

Upcoming Track and Field Meet Monday June 10

Congratulations to everyone who has earned a spot on our Track and Field team. Students must have their Acknowledgment of Risk forms signed and returned to Mr. Olsen to attend. The $20.00 team fee for track athletes are available for payment on MYCBE. Thanks for your attention to this.

Best of luck to our athletes on Monday!

Attendance after Lunch

We have noticed a growing trend in late arrivals to class following the lunch break among our Grade 7 to 9 students. Many of the late arrivals are caused by students being off campus at lunch and not being mindful of the time. If you know your student leaves campus at lunchtime, please remind them they must be in class ready to learn by 12:56 PM when classes start. If you don’t know if they venture far from school or not, a conversation about where they go at lunch could help them improve their readiness to learn in the afternoon.

Louis Riel Parent and School Council(s)

Our final meeting of the year was the AGM held on May 29. We would like to thank the council’s continued dedication to supporting students and their learning experience at Louis Riel School. We truly appreciate your efforts and generosity. We look forward to working together towards an even better Louis Riel School next year.

GPA Parent Association

The GATE Parent Association is unique in that it represents parents and supports the GATE Program in all GATE schools, but it is independent of the Calgary Board of Education and other parent organizations within those schools. To learn more please visit our website.

Spring and Summer Road Safety

We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. Please remind our students about the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely with our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways, we can keep an eye on them better now that we are getting our video cameras installed outside too.

Fun Lunches at  Louis

Fun lunches are a major source of fundraising for the Parent Council, give parents a day off from packing lunch, and are exciting for the kids to receive!  Sign up on Healthy Hunger.

It is important to note that due to health and safety protocols on food storage, the school will not be able to accommodate storing left-over lunches to the next day if your child is absent. Left-over lunches will be donated. If your student has an upcoming field trip please double check that a fun-lunch isn’t scheduled on that day so you can cancel if needed.
