Hello Louis Riel families,

Another busy week was nearly behind us with storytelling guest presenters, mobile escape rooms and a successful Texas donut fundraiser when Friday morning arrived. Our staff planned a special wellness hour for all our students to enjoy through a wide variety of sessions. How we scheduled students in K to grade 9 looked different, but every student participated in an hour of activity that focused on physical, social, or mental wellbeing. Our multitalented staff led sessions that included outdoor activities such as games, community walks, and more strenuous physical activities like Zumba and a workout class. Other sessions focused on calming and relaxation through mindful coloring, Taichi, drawing, sidewalk chalk art, crochet, and painting. Students could also choose from more social activities like tabletop games, board games, making friendship bracelets, or taking an improv class. We were encouraged to see so many of our students embrace the opportunity to engage in wellness activities and our staff is inspired to offer similar experiences in the months to come.

Limited Time Council Initiatives: Growing Smiles DEADLINE May 1 & Rebel Coffee

Our online council meeting took place on Wednesday April 24th starting at 6:30pm. This month we discussed our updated video security system and the benefits it provides to student, staff, and the school community. We also discussed some of the preparations for next year and shared the constructive feedback we collected in our annual planning survey. When we work together we help improve teaching and learning at Louis Riel school. Thank you to all those who attended and we’ll see you again on May 29th for the AGM.

We are looking to recruit new executive members for next year. Please come to our AGM in May.

GPA Parent Association

The GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Parent Association is a registered, non-profit volunteer organization, committed to supporting a high-quality GATE Program which meets the needs of learners who are gifted, within the Calgary Board of Education (CBE).

The GATE Parent Association is unique in that it represents parents and supports the GATE Program in all GATE schools, but it is independent of the Calgary Board of Education and other parent organizations within those schools. To learn more please visit our website https://gatecalgary.ca/

Belated CYSF Results Follow-Up

Each year we are amazed by the creativity and diversity of projects our students bring to the Science Fair. All our scientists should be very proud of their dedication to the pursuit of science and the hard work they put into their projects. Our school was awarded the CCSPE Junior High Aggregate, and several of our scientists also took home individual category awards. These categories included Neuroscience, STEM, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Travel, Life Science, and the Director’s Award. Louis Riel will be sending a student along with a team of 15 students from Calgary to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa at the end of May. Hooray for Science!

Spring and Summer Weather is Here

When we begin to see warmer temperatures and no more ice on the sidewalks we begin to see more students choosing to ride bikes and scooters to school. We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. What we need to remind our students about is the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely at our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways we can keep an eye on them better now that we are getting our video cameras installed outside too.

Fun Lunches at Louis

Fun lunches are a major source of fundraising for the Parent Council, give parents a day off from packing lunch, and are exciting for the kids to receive!  Sign up at www.HealthyHunger.ca. There is also a link on the Louis Riel School website.

It is important to note that due to health and safety protocols on food storage, the school will not be able to accommodate storing left-over lunches to the next day if your child is absent. Left-over lunches will be donated. If your student has an upcoming field trip please double check that a fun-lunch isn’t scheduled on that day so you can cancel if needed.
