Hello Louis Riel families,
The week started with a lot of excitement about the partial solar eclipse on Monday and some creative strategies to ensure student safety. Although this was a relatively rare astronomical phenomenon to see in person our young scientists chose to observe the eclipse safely in classrooms through online links to NASA and observatories around the planet. Our grade 5s had a visit from the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation, grade 7 Outdoor Ed students hiked Grassi Lakes, and our grade 9s visited the U of C Biogeosciences Institute in Kananaskis. We also wrapped up our inaugural dodgeball tournament and crowned a team of champions. Their names will be added to a plaque on our intramural trophy to be forever remembered for their speed, cunning and skill on the dodgeball court. The upcoming week may be shortened by the non-instructional day on Friday but there are lots of events upcoming.
Our student athletes who recently completed their volleyball season will be looking forward to teaching the teachers a thing or two on the court as we play our staff vs. Student games this week against the senior and junior teams. Yikes.

Limited Time Council Initiatives: Growing Smiles and Rebel Coffee
Our next online council meeting is scheduled for April 24 starting at 6:30pm. This month we will be discussing updating our legacy video security system and the benefits of a refreshed security camera system. We will also be discussing the preparations for next year already underway and the feedback we collected from our families in our annual planning survey. We look forward to seeing you virtually at our meeting on the 24th via Zoom.
A virtual meeting link will be shared closer to the meeting date.

Grade 6 PAT Announcement
Your grade 6 student(s) may be excited to learn that Alberta Education announced last week that Grade 6 English language arts and literature (ELAL) and mathematics provincial achievement tests will not be administered in the 2023/2024 school year.
Spring and Summer Weather is Here
When we begin to see warmer temperatures and no more ice on the sidewalks we begin to see more students choosing to ride bikes and scooters to school. We love seeing our students being active and choosing to make their way to school under their own power. What we need to remind our students about is the need to bring a secure lock they can use to store their bike or scooter safely at our bike racks. Even though we cannot store scooters and other wheeled vehicles in classrooms or hallways we can keep an eye on them better now that we are getting our video cameras installed outside too.
